The Essence of Christmas Giving

The year 2019 is soon to be behind us.  As I reflect over the past 11 months, you will agree with me that it was an eventful year.
What may stand out for most was the constant outages of the BPL power supply, and then came one of the worst natural disaster in the country’s history, Hurricane Dorian.  This hurricane was regarded by some, as the most intense tropical cyclone on record to strike The Bahamas. As the Bahamas continues to heal, the month of December is welcomed, as it brings all the joys of the Christmas season.  But what is the real joy or meaning of this season? Is it the gifts under the tree, the lights in the windows, the cards in the mail, turkey dinners with family and friends?  Is this the real meaning of Christmas?

If it were, then for many persons, it would be a time of sorrow, because for some, there is no extra money to buy the delights of Christmas or, for whatever reason, no families or friends with whom they can gather to celebrate the season.

Yet, Christmas can be a season of great joy, because it is a time when we can reflect on God’s great love for us. It can be a time of healing and renewed strength. You see, Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the Christ child. God sent His only Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. They knew this was no ordinary baby. The prophets had foretold of His coming hundreds of years before.

Isaiah 9:6, “For unto us a child is born, Unto us, a Son is given”.
The South Bahamas Conference’s Executive Committee, Administration, Departmental Directors, Pastors, and Office staff, pause at this time, to express our heartfelt thanks to all, from near and far, who gave unselfishly of their time, finances and goods this year to relieve the suffering of our Brothers and Sisters from the North Bahamas Conference.

Your gift of giving, just as God gave of His only begotten son to die for us, is indeed the true essence of Christmas. May God bless and keep you as you celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

Have a happy and safe holiday as we look forward to another brand-new year.

--Pastor Kenny Deveaux, President, South Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists
