C.H.A.M Week Of Prayer October 16-19, 2019--"STEEL VALUES"

Prayer is an  essential part of our Christian walk. In communing with God, we grow closer to Him.

During the CHAM Week of Prayer, we hope that the children of the South Bahamas Conference will learn to understand the importance of prayer. The theme of this year’s readings is ‘Steel Values’. As we go through these inspirational lessons during the upcoming week, the children will present on topics of Faith, Perseverance, Humility, Fidelity, and Integrity.

The practical lessons will take them through these points as they use them as straps to build a 'steel bridge'. Isn’t that how it is in life? We go through different experiences and the hope is that as we rely on God, He will build our characters into being more like His. We see the power of an almighty God and then our faith is strengthened as a result of it.

The focus text for these readings is found in Romans 8:35, 38-39:

"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord".--New International Version (NIV )

Here are some tips for teaching your child to pray.

Teach prayer as being a conversation.  Children learn from what they see, so let them see you praying. As they learn to pray, help them to overcome shyness. Avoid ridiculing their prayers.

Give your child a simple prayer formula to follow:

  • Adoration. Teach them to worship God for who He is. They can use the Psalms for phrases of adoration to God.
  • Confess. Let them know that they can tell their sins to God and ask Him to forgive their mistakes.
  • Thanksgiving. Your child can be led to recall specific blessings in their lives.
  • Supplication. Simplify this big word for them, which means to present their needs/requests to Him.

Be encouraging of your child as they learn to pray, letting them know that they can pray at any time to God.

Daily, we all have to stay as close to God as much as possible, so that He can strengthen us, 'strong as steel'. It is only then; He will be able to mold us into the character of Christ.

Mrs. Lavern A. Sturrup
Director, Children & Adolescent Ministries Department.
