Food Supplementation Program - September 2019

On September 1, 2019, Hurricane Dorian assaulted The Bahamas with a fury heretofore unseen. The intensity of the storm resulted in the devastation of a scope and scale for which we have no frame of reference. Many are dead and missing; tens of thousands are homeless and displaced. With these circumstances come many challenges, great and small. The Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is doing an excellent job in responding to the disaster, with much-appreciated assistance from many foreign governments, and local and international private partners. Members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church housed in some of the hurricane shelters indicated that their biblical diet was not always considered in the meal planning. As a result, the Adventist Laymen’s Services and Industries (ASi) Bahamas undertook the effort to ensure that all Seventh-day Adventists, as well as others who wished to abstain from flesh foods and / or unclean flesh foods, would have appropriate dietary options. ASi Bahamas coordinated various Seventh-day Adventist Churches’ Community Service Departments, Seventh-day Adventist-owned restaurants, and several concerned, dedicated individuals to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for persons housed in the shelters. Daily, up to two hundred forty (240) meals are served to Seventh-day Adventists, Rastafarians, and others not affiliated with either group, who sought to eat following biblical guidelines.

The Institutions and individuals give of their time, substance and finances to make this effort a success. The Atlantic Caribbean Union and the South Bahamas Conference also contribute financially and logistically to this effort. We expect that this Ministry will continue for a minimum of three (3) months, considering that six (6) months is more realistic.

To sustain this program, we need your help. We need volunteers to donate food items, to cook meals, and to deliver food at the various mealtimes. If you can volunteer, please contact Elder Ian Greene (shiloh4big@hotmail.com or 556-0492) or Elder Audley Mitchell (audleymitchell@gmail.com or 544-8274).

ASi is about presenting Christ in the Marketplace, spreading the Gospel where we are. We are here, in The Bahamas, in the wake of Hurricane Dorian, doing our part, by the grace of God. As long as it takes, ASi Bahamas will be here.

--Ms. Shandera Smith, ASi Secretary, South Bahamas.
