Hurricane Awareness and Preparedness

Lead article by Pastor Valentino Campbell, Community Services Coordinator.

The nature of man is to procrastinate, believing that time is always on his side. In the book of Genesis, it tells us that God was preparing to destroy man from the face of the earth by a flood because of disobedience; hence, Noah was asked to prepare a boat to ride out the storm. Noah was never exposed to rain before, so can you imagine a flood?

Noah knew the storm was imminent and because of his trust and obedience, in His Creator, the necessary preparations were made.  The flood eventually came, and countless lives were loss and “only” Noah and his family were spared.  Do you think this was by chance?

Each year from June 1st to November 30th is the Atlantic hurricane season.  As a people we are aware of this; however, many continue to go about their business ignoring the warnings as if nothing will happen, and they do not see the need of preparing until it is too late.   This may result in loss of human lives, livestock, properties being partially damaged and, in some cases, totally obliterated.

Some may ask; why should we be so concerned and prepare if loss is inevitable, as a result of hurricanes?

Here are some things you can do to prepare:

Put hurricane shutters in a place where they are easily accessible. Begin to remove objects from around your home that can become missiles in the midst of strong winds. Find out where the nearest shelter is to your home in case you have to evacuate. Secure flashlights, batteries, transistor radios, matches, candles, blankets, and canned goods. Last but not least, get a map from NEMA so that you can follow each storm as they develop.
